Generic Prometrium capsules (Micronized Progesterone) – Product Information

Generic Prometrium capsules (Micronized Progesterone) are indicated for use in the prevention of endometrial hyperplasia in nonhysterectomized postmenopausal women who are receiving conjugated estrogens tablets. They are also indicated for use in secondary amenorrhea as well as for maintaining pregnancy.
The active ingredient present in Generic Prometrium Capsules is Micronized Progesterone.
Micronized Progesterone is marketed under trade names such as Prometrium capsules, Utrogestan capsules and Endogest Soft Gelatin capsules. Endogest is available in strengths of 100 mg and 200 mg.

Dosage And Administration

Generic Prometrium (Endogest Soft Gelatin capsules) comes as an oral capsule in 100 mg and 200 mg dosage forms . The recommended adult Oral dosage of Micronized Progesterone Soft Gelatin capsules (Generic Prometrium) for adults is given below:
Prevention of Endometrial Hyperplasia:
Micronized Progesterone capsules should be given as a single daily dose in the evening, 200 mg orally for 12 days sequentially per 28 day cycle, to postmenopausal women with a uterus who are receiving daily conjugated estrogens tablets.
Secondary Amenorrhea:
Micronized Progesterone Capsules may be given as a single daily dose of 400 mg in the evening for 10 days.

Generic Prometrium (Endogest Soft Gelatin capsules) - Contraindications

Generic Prometrium (Endogest Soft Gelatin capsules) is contraindicated in patients that have hypersensitivity to Micronized Progesterone, soya, peanut or to any ingredient in the formulation of the capsule. It is also containdicated in patients with the following conditions:

  • active hepatic dysfunction or disease, especially of the obstructive type;
  • personal history of known or suspected estrogen dependent or progestin dependent malignant neoplasia (e.g. breast cancer or endometrial cancer)
  • endometrial hyperplasia;
  • undiagnosed abnormal genital bleeding;
  • known or suspected pregnancy;
  • active or past history of arterial thromboembolic disease (e.g. stroke, myocardial infarction, coronary heart disease)
  • classical migraine;
  • active or past history of confirmed venous thromboembolism (such as deep venous thrombosis or pulmonary embolism) or active thrombophlebitis;
  • partial or complete loss of vision due to ophthalmic vascular disease

Side Effects of Generic Prometrium (Endogest Soft Gelatin capsules)

The common possible side effects reported in patients treated with Generic Prometrium (Endogest Soft Gelatin capsules) include Headache, Breast Tenderness, Joint Pain, Depression, Dizziness, Abdominal Bloating, Hot Flashes, Urinary Problems, Abdominal Pain, Vaginal Discharge, Nausea / Vomiting, Worry, Chest Pain, Diarrhea, Night Sweats, Breast Pain, Swelling of Hands and Feet, Vaginal Dryness, Constipation, Breast Carcinoma, Breast Excisional Biopsy and Cholecystectomy.
