Novelon Contraceptive Pills – Product Information

Novelon manufactured by Organon® is a combined oral contraceptive pill. It is a 21-day pill – you take one each day for 21 days, followed by 7 days when you take no pills.
The active ingredients present in Novelon Contraceptive Pills are Desogestrel 0.15 mg and Ethinyl Estradiol 0.03 mg.

Uses Of Novelon Contraceptive Tablets

Novelon Tablets are used for prevention of of pregnancy . To prevent pregnancy it is important to take Novelon as instructed and to start each pack on time.
The following non-contraceptive health benefits have been associated with Novelon Contraceptive pills:
Novelon is also used to treat mild to moderate acne.
Your periods may be lighter and shorter. As a result, the risk of anaemia may be lower. Your period pains may become less severe or may completely disappear.
In addition, some serious disorders have been reported to occur less frequently in users of Combined Pills containing Ethinyl oestradiol. These are: benign breast disease, ovarian cysts, pelvic infections (pelvic inflammatory disease), ectopic pregnancy (pregnancy in which the embryo implants outside of the womb) and cancer of the endometrium (lining of the womb) and ovaries.

Novelon Contraceptive Tablets - Contraindications

Novelon Contraceptive Tablets is contraindicated in patients with the following conditions:

  • Hypersensitivity to Desogestrel, Ethinyl Estradiol or any inactive ingredient present in Novelon tablets.
  • A disorder affecting the blood circulation: in particular, those conditions relating to thrombosis
  • A stroke (caused by a blood clot in or a rupture of a blood vessel in the brain)
  • A condition that may be a first sign of a heart attack
  • A major surgery
  • A history of migraine accompanied by e.g. visual symptoms, speech disability, or weakness or numbness in any part of your body.
  • Diabetes mellitus with blood vessel damage.
  • Pancreatitis (an inflammation of the pancreas) associated with high levels of fatty substances in your blood.
  • Jaundice (yellowing of the skin) or severe liver disease and your liver is not working normally
  • A cancer that may grow under the influence of sex hormones (e.g. of the breast or the genital organs).
  • A benign or malignant liver tumour.
  • Any unexplained vaginal bleeding.
  • A disturbance of blood clotting

Novelon - Dosage

Inorder to prevent pregnancy, it is recommended to take Novelon every day for 21 days. Novelon comes in strips of 21 pills, each marked with a day of the week. Take your tablet at the same time every day. Start by taking a pill marked with the correct day of the week. Follow the direction of the arrows on the strip. Take one tablet each day, until you have finished all the 21 pills.
After you have taken all 21 tablets present in the strip, you have seven days when you take no tablets. Swallow each pill whole, with water if necessary. Do not chew the pill. Always check with your doctor or health care advisor if you are not sure.

Side Effects of Novelon Birth Control Pills

Serious possible side effects of Novelon birth control pills include painful swelling in your leg, sudden chest pain, difficulty breathing, heart attack or stroke, severe allergic reaction, breast cancer, cancer of the cervix, severe liver problems.
Other possible side effects of Generic Marvelon include Migraine or headache, Putting on weight or losing weight, Problems with blood sugar, Breast problems, Depression or mood changes Heart or circulation problems, Gynaecological and vaginal problems, Bleeding and spotting between your periods for the first few months, Skin problems, such as rash; brown patches on your face or body (chloasma), Stomach problems, such as nausea; vomiting, Discomfort of the eyes if you wear contact lenses, Gall stones, Chorea and Systemic lupus erythematosus
