Treatment of Hypothyroidism And Goiters Using Eltroxin Tablets (Levothyroxine Sodium)

Treatment with Eltroxin Tablets is generally recommended replacement or as a supplemental therapy in patients of any age or state (including pregnancy) with hypothyroidism of any etiology except transient hypothyroidism. Eltroxin is also used as a pituitary TSH suppressant in the treatment or prevention of various types of euthyroid goiters. The active ingredient present in Eltroxin Tablets is Levothyroxine Sodium.

Recommended Dosage - Eltroxin Tablets

The recommended initial dosage for adult patients is 50 to 100 micrograms daily and adjusted at four or six week intervals by 50 micrograms until attainment of clinical and biochemical euthyroidism. This may require doses of 100 to 200 micrograms daily. With patients over 50 years of age, it is not advisable to exceed 50 micrograms a day initially.

Side Effects Of Eltroxin Tablets

The possible side effects are fatigue, increased appetite, weight loss, heat intolerance, fever, and excessive sweating; palpitations, tachycardia, arrhythmias, increased pulse and blood pressure, heart failure, angina, myocardial infarction and cardiac arrest; headache, hyperactivity, nervousness, anxiety, irritability, emotional lability, and insomnia; hair loss, flushing; decreased bone mineral density; diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, and elevations in liver function tests; tremors, muscle weakness; menstrual irregularities, impaired fertility; and dyspnea.

Contraindications Of Eltroxin Tablets

Eltroxin Tablets are contraindicated in: Patients with an apparent hypersensitivity to levothyroxine sodium or thyroid hormones or any of the inactive product constituents. Patients with untreated subclinical (suppressed serum TSH with normal T3 and T4 levels) or overt thyrotoxicosis of any etiology. Patients with acute myocardial infarction. Patients with uncorrected adrenal insufficiency, as thyroid hormones increase tissue demands for adrenocortical hormones and may thereby precipitate acute adrenal crisis
